What is an Ambulatory Surgical Center (ASC)?

  • Ambulatory Surgical Centers (ASC) are facilities where surgeries that do not require a hospital inpatient admission are performed. They provide a safe, cost-effective, caring and convenient environment that is less stressful than a large hospital environment.

What are the hours of operation?

  • Our hours of operation are from 6:30 A.M. to 4:00 P.M., Monday through Friday and 6:30 A.M. through 2:00 P.M. Saturday. We are closed on Sundays.



 Can I schedule my surgery with you?

  • Your surgeon's office will contact the center to obtain a booking date.
  • The doctor's office will assign a tentative time, the Center will contact you the day prior to surgery with an exact arrival time.



Will I be able to drive after my surgery?

  • If you are having surgery under general anesthesia, you cannot drive and must be accompanied home by a responsible adult. This policy is for your safety, and is strictly adhered to. If you are having surgery under local anestesia, we strongly recommend that all patients are accompanied by a responsible adult and are given a ride home.



Is there assistance available at the Center upon arrival?

  • Yes, any patients who may need assistance upon arrival at the Center should call our main number at 908-393-8360. A nurse will be available to assist them with a wheelchair, cane or walker, if needed.


What type of identification do I need to bring?

  • Please be sure to bring a government-issued form of photo identification such as a driver's license, state ID, or passport. Please bring your insurance cards for both primary and secondary insurance carriers.



How do I know if my insurance company will cover my surgery?

  • Please check with your insurance carrier to review your benefits and determine if pre-authorization is required. If you need assistance with this, please contact your phycian's office.



If I receive a check from my insurance carrier, what do I do?

  • Please bring the check with the attached Explanation of Benefits (EOB) and endorse the back of the check with "For Deposit Only to Somerset ASC for Services Rendered" with your signature. Or mail the check to: Somerset Ambulatory Surgical Center, LLC at 1 Highway 206 North, Somerville, New Jersey, 08876.


When should I arrive?

  • You will receive a call from the Center the day before your scheduled surgery with a an exact arrival time. Typically, your arrival time will be 45 minutes prior to surgery . All times are subject to change.



What do I wear?

  • Please wear comfortable clothes and  remove eye contacts and makeup. Please leave all jewelry and valuables at home (including rings, watches, necklaces, earrings, and money). While we do our best to safeguard your belongings, they are best secured at home.



What do I do the day before surgery?


What should I bring the day of surgery?

  • Please bring all insurance cards and information with you.
  • Please bring your list of medications, including the dosages. Also include a list of any supplements, herbal preparations and vitamins that you take.
  • Please bring any paperwork given to you by your surgeon.
  • Please bring your healthcare Power of Attorney and/or Guardianship papers (if applicable).
  • Please leave all jewelry and valuables at home (including rings, watches, necklaces, earrings, and money). While we do our best to safeguard your belongings, they are best secured at home.



How long will the procedure take?

  • Times will vary according to procedure but an estimate can be determined during the preoperative interview.



What should I do if something comes up and I need to cancel my surgery? 

  • If you need to cancel your surgery before your sergical date, please notify your surgeon's office as soon as possible. If you need to cancel your surgery the day of surgery, please call the center at 908-393-8360.



What medications can I take?

  • Please take any morning doses of cardiac or blood pressure medications with a sip of water by 6:00 A.M. If you are a diabetic, please check your blood sugar before arrival. DO NOT take oral hyper-glycemics in the morning before surgery. If you are an insulin dependent diabetic contact your physicians for preoperative instructions.



What can I expect before surgery?

  • Expect to receive a phone call from the Center nurse to review your health history and give you preoperative instructions. If necessary, you might be contacted by an anesthesiologist for an airway assessment.



What can I expect after surgery?

  • You will receive written and verbal discharge instructions before going home.Your doctor's phone number will be included in case of emergency or complications after discharge.
  • You will receive a follow up phone call from an SASC nurse the following day to address any questions or concerns.



Will my family be able to visit me immediately after my procedure?

  • Due to the need for privacy, we suggest that a limit of one or two family members visit the patient during the postoperative phase. We are happy to give family members waiting in reception periodic updates on the patient’s condition.
